Last Song Before Night by Ilana C. Myer

Last Song Before NightThe Bad Guy is really bad. (His father is worse.) The King is really useless. The Magic is all a fraud… or is it? And should the Real Magic be kept under wraps?

Girls can’t qualify as Official Musicians, but Lin is so great that the Greatest Bard encouraged her to pay her music at the Festival. (You know how the Bad Guy’s father is worse? Lin’s family is Worse Yet, but she doesn’t let herself become a Bad Guy because she is Pure. Although not a virgin, because that kind of purity is so last week.)

Adventures ensue. Magic happens. The last few pages reward and punish the good and the bad. I am not waiting for the sequel.

On the other hand, I read it through to the end, so it could not have been that bad.
