The Green Glass Sea by Ellen Klages

The Green Glass Sea (Green Glass #1)Mom’s been gone forever, Grandma just had a stroke, and Daddy is a scientist at an army base so super-secret that the place has no name. Modern? No. The year is 1945, and the USA is at war with the Germany. And Japan. Daddy is working on the super-secret “gadget”.

I, an adult, figured out what the gadget was pretty quickly. I wonder how quickly kids will figure out that this “gadget” did not always exist. There are scientists who worked on the “gadget” and then, after the test demo, insisted that no ethical government could use it.

Lots of amazing period details. Drink some warm Ovaltine as you read. SHAZAM!
