White as Snow For Miles Around

It’s not so obvious in each individual book, but at some point I realize that hey, the last batch of books I read were as white as white can be.  Hey, all you SFF and Mystery and Historical and YA writers: Where are all the people I see in my neighborhood?

The Johnson Test

After reading about women in fiction and the Bechdel test, Alaya Dawn Johnson constructed the POC (people of color) Bechdel test. The rules are:

  1. It has to have two POC in it
  2. Who talk to each other
  3. About something other than a white person

A whole batch of my recent reads have not had any colored folk, much less two named characters who talk to each other.

Bechdel Test

This reminds me of people (men, mostly) who wonder why the Bechtel test is important. In each individual movie or book, no it’s not that important.  It’s the trend that makes me stop and say, hey, what’s going on here?  Men do stuff, men talk to men, women talk to men, but women cannot talk to women.
