Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters

Underground Airlines

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So tragic, Presidential nominee Abraham Lincoln was assassinated before he ever took his oath of office. In a fit of patriotism, the South and North made peace with keeping slavery… until the individual states gave it up in the 1900s. Only the Hard 4 still have slavery.

Early in American (real) history, free states refused to comply with the Fugitive Slave Laws, and modern alternate-America has the same squeamishness about returning sla – about returning Persons Bound to Labor. Peebs, as they are called, can hide out for years in the North before being found. Sometimes the Railroad/Airline will bring to safety in Canada.

Why would a black man work for the slave catchers? That’s a tough question, unfolding through the book.
