The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Bruce D. Perry

The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist's Notebook--What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and HealingThis book was was very interesting and educational. Why do some people have such terrible reactions to seemingly innocuous events – like a doorbell ringing, or someone saying ‘come on out to the garage with me’. It was a harsh look at how easily life can go wrong, even with well-meaning parents – and how badly things can go wrong when adults actively harm children.

This was a very readable book. Some parts were very clear explanations of what could have been techno-babble. Some parts clearly laid out horrific situations.

It was hard to tell, sometimes, if I was reading a psychiatrist’s account and learning something, or just walking down the circus freakshow and gawping at the strange things that humans can be.
